Teaching philosophy

My teaching philosophy is focused on student experience and engagement. I strive to create a positive and safe learning environment where students are comfortable asking questions, learning new skill sets and stretching their knowledge by applying it in a practical way to the content learned.

In this environment, I believe that demonstrative learning to begin with is imperative to equip the students to understand the basics of what I am asking of them as their teacher. I want them to know that I am not asking anything of them what I cannot myself do. This then fosters an environment where the learning process is about growth and equipping skill sets they can pull into their future employment upon graduation.

Once the demonstrative learning process has been created, I believe there needs to be a transition to be made from demonstrative to constructivism. As we progress through our learning time together, a balance of showing and helping lays the foundation for the teacher to be able to step back and letting them explore for themselves from this place. In this exploration, keeping the door open to ask questions from their experience that worked or didn’t work to improve their skill set for future work, but letting them work it through.
With this method, I believe when the students leave the classroom on the last day of school, they will feel ready to face the challenges ahead of them with strong problem-solving skills and professional practices.

Using a variety of teaching/learning strategies

Assignment is always released before class and then read through in class.

Evaluating learning using a variety of valid and reliable tools and techniques.

Technical Critiques break down the larger assignment into more creative, hands on work for the students to put the learning into experience.

They can ask questions from working with the material in a smaller project and also share work with each other to make them more comfortable having their work seen.

Workshop Checklists create an learning environment where the students have direction in their learning but having to interpret the information in order to meet the settings or work on the checklist.

This gives the students a reference back to of how to set their camera settings and begin photographing things.

Working independently and with others to develop and/or adapt learning materials.

Due to the closure of the school and work being converted to online, we have been meeting each week to talk about our challenges and triumphs in our courses. We are each from different learning disciplines and it is so important to pull on each others resources.

And well also celebrate our friends birthday too, of course!

Using technology to enhance productivity and help students learn.

Students have access to all the gear we teach in our lectures. We use different makes, models, lens, lighting and grip gear each week. They learn all this technology while in a safe environment to learn and ask questions.

When they graduate, they will be able to make informed decisions of the equipment and gear they will need to set up their business successfully.

Depending and developing effective curriculum to support student success.

Below are two of my Course Section Information, the first one is one of the first ones I had ever written. It was quick and easy to reference but did not give the students much to follow through with if they missed or class or wanted to prepare for class. The second one was after working for 2 years in the Photography Department, it is much more interactive and helpful to the students.

For the second one, the Course Section Information (CSI) has direct links provided in most weeks, the students can reference back to this in order to stay up to date or to reference what will be learned that week.

I will now always implement this in my CSI as students can reference this document regularly as we process through and it backs up the work done each week and online.

Thank you!
